The Brides of Rollrock Island

by Margo Lanagan

This story is a take on an old legend I’ve heard before; of women who rose from seal skins and could only return to the sea if their skins were returned to them. Margo Lanagan takes this story and weaves it into a twisted narrative following the men of Rollrock Island.

The book is strange and weird and haunting; it is well-written and turns and changes through generations of men and how the marriage with the seals changes life on the island. It is dark and beautiful at once and sometimes confusing. Each new narrator took me a few pages to catch up to- sometimes years had passed between them.

Overall I think this book will be wonderful for the upcoming cloudy winter nights if you are armed with a strong mug of tea.
